You only get one first impression and that is especially true of homes. One of the most important things you can do to make sure that first impression is a positive one is LAWN CARE! A lush green lawn makes all the difference for the atmosphere of your home and who doesn’t love having the best lawn on the block? Here are the most important steps to take right now to enhance the quality of your grass.
Rake: Using a power rake in the spring helps clean out thatch from your lawn. Thatch is a layer of living and dead organic matter that organically builds up between your soil and living grass. While you may not have to do this every single year, thatch should be kept to under half an inch. Power raking reduces your chances of pests and disease as well as increasing the effectiveness of your lawn treatments you will apply throughout the year.
Overseed: Lawns will naturally thin due to foot traffic, heavy snow, pets, and neglect. It happens! The solution is as simple as picking up a bag of lawn seed that matches your current grass type (if you are unsure, bring a small sample of your grass to the garden center and ask a pro!) and applying it to the areas in need of the pick-me-up. While spring isn’t the ideal time to plant your grass seed (fall is best) you can have success by applying a slow release nitrogen fertilizer with the seed.
Water: Since we have had such a “wet” winter and early spring your lawn won’t need a lot of water this year! You will want to water with 1/2″ to 1″ of water per week. The best way to measure the amount of water you are giving your grass set out an empty tuna can while you water and you then measure how much you collect in one session and adjust as needed.
Fertilize: Local garden centers in East Idaho have handy step by step programs that are perfect for our area. In the early spring it’s recommended to apply a soil activator, a light fertilizer that contains humates. This soil activator can also help reduce that pesky thatch in your lawn! In the later spring you’ll want to add an iron rich lawn food to help your grass achieve that lush look everyone loves! Drop into your favorite neighborhood garden center and ask about their lawn programs that make this part foolproof!
Weed Prevention: Now is a great time to get ahead of the weeds that will be popping up soon! Again, the pros at local garden centers will be able to tell you what you will need for your specific lawn needs. Have dandelions? Crab or quack grass? They will have the perfect product for you!
Talk to a pro: This one is very important! Every lawn is different. Every homeowner will have different needs. Find a local nursery or garden center that you love and take advantage of their vast amounts of knowledge! As a former employee of one such local business I can tell you that there are no silly questions and they are more than happy to help you achieve that beautiful lawn you dream of! Take in samples, ask questions, pick their brains! The best way to take care your unique lawn is to learn as much as you can!
